Reporting information

You have already learnt how to offer someone’s opinion in Te Kākano, now you will look at how to report information not ascribed to a particular person. Look at these examples:

E kī ana te pukapuka nei, he roa akeThis book says that the Waikato River is
te awa o Waikato i te awa o Waipā. longer than the Waipā River.
E ai ki ngā kōrero, ko te tīrairaka teBy all accounts, the fantail is the cheekiest
manu whakatoi o ngā manu katoa.bird of all the birds.

Tirohia ngā kōrero e whai ake nei, āta whakaarohia mēnā kei te tika, kei te hē rānei te whakapākehātanga.
Look at the following sentences, think carefully if the English translation is correct or incorrect

Kei wareware ki te whakamahi i ngā piko, ngā tohu pātai, ngā kopi me ngā tohutō i ngā wāhi e tika ana.

E kī ana tērā pukapuka, ko te iwi Māori te tangata whenua o Aotearoa.
It is said that some of the people from the Pacific have genealogical connections.

E kī ana te niupepa, kei te ngaro haere ētehi o ngā manu māori. Me tiaki e tātou katoa.
According to the newspaper, some of the native birds are becoming extinct. We all should protect them.

E ai ki te rōpū kapa haka rā, ko rātou te tīma toa.
According to that kapa haka group, they are the losing team.

E kī ana tērā pukapuka, ko te iwi Māori te tangata whenua o Aotearoa.
According to that book, the Māori people are the Indigenous people of New Zealand.

E kī ana, ko Taupō te tāone pai ki te toro atu i te takurua.

It is said that Taupō is a good town to visit in the winter.

E kī ana tērā pānui, me whakahōnore te Tiriti o Waitangi.
According to that poster, the Treaty of Waitangi should be honoured.

E ai ki a Ngāi Tūhoe, ko ngā tamariki o te kohu rātou.
According to the Ngāti Kahungunu tribe, they are the children of the mist.

E kī ana te rīpoata, he pai ake te wāhine i te tāne ki te taraiwa.
According to the report, women are better drivers than men.
