You have already learnt that i is used to indicate past location. There is a clear difference between kei and i in the following examples.
Hei tauira
I hea rāua? | Where were they? |
I te tāone rāua. | They were in town. |
Kei hea rāua? | Where are they. |
Kei te tāone rāua. | They are in town. |
I hea tana koti? | Where was her coat? |
I runga i te turu. | On the chair. |
Kei hea tana koti? | Where is her coat? |
Kei runga i te tūru. | It's on the chair. |
