Kei hea? 1/2

“Kei hea?” is used to ask someone where an object is or where a person or people are. If a person asks you this, they will begin with “Kei hea..?”

Hei tauira:

Kei hea tō kāinga?
Where is your home?

Kei hea a Te Hererīpene?
Where is Te Hererīpene?

Kei hea ō hoa?
Where are your friends?

Possible answers to these questions:

Kei Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara taku kāinga.
My home is in Wellington.

Kei Tāmaki-makau-rau ia.
She is in Auckland.

Kei Ōtepoti rātou.
They are in Dunedin.

One of the characters from Te Whanake will ask you about the whereabouts of someone famous in the Māori world. The place where the person is will be provided in brackets and you must give a correct answer using the short sentence structure and the place name. e.g. Kei Kirikiriroa. – In Hamilton.
