So that...
Kia combines with ai to indicate that the action or state with kia … ai is the result of the action in the main part of the sentence. Kia …. ai is the equivalent to ‘so that’.
Hei tauira:
Kia tere te oma, kia tae moata ai koutou ki te kura. | Run quickly so that you (3+) will arrive early to school. |
Ūkuia te papa rā kia mā ai. | Rub the board so that it is clean. |
These two words kia and ai have already been encountered each with other meanings but together they translate as ‘so that’ or ‘in order that’.

Whakamāoritia ēnei rerenga kōrero.
Whiriwhiria te rerenga kōrero e tika ana mō te reo Māori.
Kei wareware ki te whakamahi i ngā piko, ngā tohu pātai, ngā kopi me ngā tohutō i ngā wāhi e tika ana.

The elderly women (3+) walk slowly so that they do not get tired.
Come here so that you can see the words.
Wake up early so that you (3+) can go to the rugby.
Sing a song so that the people can hear your beautiful voice.
Huakina ngā wini, kia puta atu ai te haunga.
Haere mai ki konei, kia kihi ai au i a koe.
Kia kaha te pakipaki, kia mōhio ai au kei konei koe.
Katia te kūaha kia kaua te pēpi e puta atu ai ki waho.
