Where someone is from

“Nō hea?” is used to ask someone or people where they are from.
If you ask someone where they are from, you will usually start with “Nō hea ..?”

Hei tauira:

Nō hea koe?
Where are you from?

Nō hea kōrua?
Where are you two from?

Nō hea a Pita Sharples?
Where is Pita Sharples from?

Possible answers to these questions

Nō Ngāti Porou ahau.
I am from Ngāti Porou.

Nō Ngāti Kahungunu māua.
We are from Ngāti Kahungunu.

Nō Ngāti Kahungunu a Pita Sharples.
Pita Sharples is from Ngāti Kahungunu

Iwi are tribes which people affiliate to. They are united groups of people who all affiliate back to common ancestors.

Te Wāhanga 1

One of the characters from Te Whanake will ask you where someone famous in the Māori world is from. The tribe which the person belongs to will be provided in brackets and you must give a correct answer using the short sentence structure and the tribe's name highlighted on the map. e.g. Nō Tūhoe – From Tūhoe.
