Macronised Vowels for Mac Users
Mac OS X comes with Maori language settings as standard. You may still need to configure your Mac to use the Maori keyboard settings as follows:
1. Open the "System Preferences" menu.

2. Choose the "International" option.

3. Click the "Input Menu" tab.

4. Scroll down the list of keyboard layouts and make sure that "Maori" is checked.
- Also note the "Input source options" section at the bottom of this window. If you select "Allow a different input source for each document", you will have to change the setting (described in the next step) for each window you use.
- You will also need to make sure that the "Show input menu in menu bar" option is checked.
You can now close the "System Preferences" window.
5. Click the Input menu in the top right of your screen and select the "Maori" option.

You can now enter macronised vowels by holding the "Option" key and pressing the vowel.
NOTE: Macrons do not work in MS Word before version 2004 as older versions do not support Unicode characters, which the macronised vowels are.
For older versions of Word you can get Maori fonts that display Umlauts (like the Ü in Über) as Macrons. This workaround will only work for computers that have the special font installed.
